It's Almost Here

The count down is on. Confirmation email received along with see you real soon message! We are officially going to Disney World. Woo Hoo!

I still don't quite believe it. I think I need to start packing the suitcases and create an Excel spread sheet for myself. I just will not feel prepared for this vacation until I have the itinerary in Excel. Hmm, I know there is an app for that but I have it in my head that I' m going to map this all out. Prepping for Disney is not relaxing but I'm hoping being there is. I can't wait to put my mouse ears on and take a deep breath at the happiest place on earth.

Spring is here!

I'm still in a North Face Parker this morning on the train but Spring is here. It's actually been here almost three weeks but it's finally pushing Winter aside and showing it's stuff. The crocuses are out, the daffodils are catching up and I need to handwash all of my winter sweaters and pack them up. We'll not everything is great about Spring.

I'll pay the price of Spring cleaning to enjoy warm days again.

Spring finds us:
Suffering from miserable colds
Prepping for a trip to Disney
Reading lots of mystery books (mysterious since mysteries aren't really our thing or are they?)
Working to cure our local fox of mange
Working on good habits
Loving Stampy Cat
Celebrating Cleo's 1st birthday

Not a bad start.

Happy Birthday USA

The fireworks were rained out but we stilled managed a little patriotic cheer. Red, white and blue cupcakes took some of the sting away. Happy Birthday USA and to Uncle Frankie too,  a Fourth of July baby!

Brigid love Jane, Jane love Brigid

I found this image on the iPad today among a bunch of other images by the little one. It made me smile on my morning commute. It also made me want to turn around and just hang out with her.

 Me love you too monkey!

This is What Happens...

... when you go to the animal shelter to donate $5.00 to buy the homeless animals food.

I would ask myself how did this happen but I know it was just a question of odds. You visit the shelter enough to look at the cats and eventually you end up surrendering your credit card instead of the dollars five and leave with  a big card board box full of cat and a goody bag with kitty toys and fish treats.

Head to the pet store where you surrender your credit card again to cover the sequined collar, fancy litter box, kitten food, litter and plenty of cat toys. Throw in a new scratching post as a consolation prize for your existing cat. Luckily you still have that five dollar bill in your pocket.

And so Cleopatra (Cleo almost named Pineapple) Moffitt joins a long line of cats who have found their way into our home and lives.

I feel our the first day of summer was like living in a Visa commercial. Price of adopting a kitten and supplies $ 245.00. Look on six year old daughters face when you tell her she can adopt a kitten -priceless.

A View from the Feast

This years trip to our neighboring town's feast was squeezed in between the rains that dominated the week. Just as well, the rides were ridiculously expensive and we were having no luck gambling for baked goods and stuffed animals.

Lucky too perhaps, the Ferris Wheel was not working. I had bought the tickets and was all ready to brave the heights of the miniature wheel, but when we got on line, workers were working on the cables. It only took a few minutes of watching these low tech adjustments to steer the little over to the bouncy castles. I'll face my fears another day when the delicate workings are not laid bare.

Happily, bouncy castles and little for engines still pass muster with a six year old and there was a little money left over for an eggplant sandwich.

My Happy Place for the Week: Almalfi Coast

I keep looking at catalogues that were shot on the Almalfi Coast and find myself  wishing I could be sitting on a sun baked terrace looking out at the sea. Even though it has warmed up considerably here along the northern coast of the US, the photos of Italy's coastal towns seem so full of warmth. I just want to walk into one and smell sea air. Oh a nice filling plate of pasta would be nice too. Monday take me away.

Spring Won't Spring

Leaning into the heat on the train and I'm thinking spring just isn't coming. It's hard to imagine warm days again although hints are in the air if not the temperature. The chipmunk has surfaced and the daffodils came up under the snow. Otherwise it's just cold and there is a big sweater pile of a chairdrobe in my room.

I'm aching for warm weather but not looking forward to the wardrobe transition. I suspect I have nothing to wear. I also hate when I find myself in warm weather clothing and the weather doesn't cooperate. I may just wear my down coat right into summer. At this rate I may need to.

In the Basket

Time to start prepping for the Easter bunny and to decide on this years Easter eggs. The little one  already asked if we could dye the eggs this past weekend. Yikes! She's one eager little bunny. How about the the night before. Or if things go the way they usually do Easter Day.

I'm hoping it won't be that last minute and that we can make a nice craft activity together soi'm looking around for ideas. The Paas dye has already been purchased and we will undoubtly do some basic colors but I'd like to get a little adventurous. Here's one cool idea from pinterest. Chalkboard eggs. While the color isn't too Springy, there's plenty of opportunity to express oneself and re-express oneself. Anyone have a chalkboard eraser?

Into the Green

Goodbye white, hello green. Green - there are hints of it surfacing in the muddy brown landscape. The tips of the daffodils coming up, the moss that is mixed in with dead grass in the shady spots of the lawn, are the first touches. An explosion is on the way and I personally can't wait to for it to be wall to wall green outside.

Inspiration for a Rainy Monday

The rain has been going at it for three days. It has to stop at some point. I keep thinking the weather is going to improve. It has too, right?

Lego 3-D Madness

I went to the Lego movie thinking it would be a great way to get out of the house and something fun for my little one. I think I ended up enjoying it even more than she did.

When the movie started I was a bit skeptical to say the least and at first the whole 3-D thing seemed a bit wasted in the tight little Lego home of the films unlikely hero.

Not to worry the film quickly exploded into a blitz of action and color. Best of all the kooky storyline and clever dialogue had me laughing. Laughing more than any recent film I can remember. Is it possible that the Lego movie is the funniest movie of the year? OMG, batman I think it is. I have to say in this crazy Lego world everything is awesome except for the Krazy Glue of course.

Winter Reading: Into the Wild

I finished my first book of the year with mixed feelings. I had difficulty getting beyond my disdain for the poor choices made by the real life central character Chris McCandless.  Jon Krakauer made a sympathetic case for his choices and did a good job filling in the gaps of what McCandless may have been thinking.

Krakauer wisely asks the reader to consider the passionate mindset of youth and young men in particular. I tried to go there in my mind but remained more than a bit stuck in the head of an adult who finds the everyday challenge enough. I also struggled with the place of privilege McCandless was coming from, it is not every college graduate who can finish school scott free and then give away a trust fund before hitting the road.

Much of McCandless's adventure could of have been undertaken without causing pain to his family or losing his life. But then maybe his disappearance was to a great deal more about escaping his family and society than about taking on the wilderness.

I followed the book by watching Sean Penn's film adaption which left me far more sympathetic to this young man. Penn managed to successfully portray a family dynamic that might lead a young person to feel their only way out was to abandon their life.

Watching the film I was able to suddenly remember the extremes that go through the mind of teenagers. The all or nothing thinking and the hyper dramatic cast that colors young thoughts. McCandless was not a teenager but a college graduate. In many ways though he seemed stuck in a younger view point. The four years spent in college are for many an uncoupling from their parents. An experience that allows a young person to put time and space between themselves and their parents and start on the path to an independent life.

And that is where the film allowed me to find sympathy for Chris McCandless in the way the book hadn't. While Krakauer describes in some detail the family dynamic, Penn and his actors created in a few scenes a sense of the unhappiness that lay beneath the shiny upper middle class surface.

The overbearing quality of the adults and the nastiness of their interactions had me wanting to run. I could understand the appeal of leaving that behind to tramp around the country with other wanderers. What I still can't imagine is hiking alone into the Alaskan Wild. That is where say farewell and God Bless to Chris McCandless.

The Weather Outside

These blurry photos taken from the train during the storm on Tuesday, capture just how it feels outside. Cold, barren and stark. January is almost over but February could turn out to be a very long month.

More Snow on the Way

If the weather report is to be believed, more snow is on the way. I wished it had come during the long weekend instead of the beginning of the work week. It would have been nice to be tucked in for the storm.

Little Treats, Big Love

Sometimes after I've left the iPad sitting around, little treats turn up like this photo of our grumpy fat cat Lola. The little one would chastise me for saying that about her cat. Lola was my cat but she has definitely become her cat.

The two of them have, despite some jealousy and a less then perfect feline disposition on the part of Miss Lola, forged a close friendship. Scratches have been forgiven, imperfections overlooked and space on the bed negotiated.

Every time I hear the little one tell Lola (or Whowa as she pronounces it) "you are the most beautiful cat I the world", I want to laugh. It makes me smile that she finds her pet perfect and beautiful. The power of love at work. The world as seen through the eyes of a six year old is full of superlative beauty.

So here she is the most beautiful cat in the world, as photographed by the little one. Feel the love.
